SAS events was founded in 2013 by Steve Shimmin.
Having enjoyed a long association with the development of Cycle Sport on the Isle of Man it was a logical and natural progression to establish SAS Events in 2013.
I am a former Chairman of the IOM Cycling Association and currently Vice Chairman of the Appleby Ellan Vannin CC.
Over the years I have had the pleasure to be involved with the promotion of many cycle events on the Island including Commonwealth Youth Games 2011, Nat West Island Games and IOM International Youth Tour in addition to contributing to the development of the extensive calendar of events promoted by the local Clubs under Isle of Man Cycling Association.
As well as promoting cycle events I also have a wide experience of Triathlon both as a competitor and event organiser and a sporting 'history' that includes swimming, rugby and athletics. I'm a keen skier and am interested in all kinds of motor sport.
My colleagues Ollie Last and Gary Slack have long standing associations with cycle sport as competitors and officials . They have a wealth of organisational experience accumulated over the last 15 years and are both are actively engaged in the local cycle scene. Their children are following the family cycling traditions so they will be involved for many years to come!
Supporting the Community
SAS Events is committed to supporting the development of cycle sport on the Isle of Man. Our events complement the existing extensive racing schedule staged by the local Clubs. Indeed all SAS Events promotions are sanctioned and supported by the IOM Cycling Association and feature within its calendar of events. IOM Cycling Association members also provide valuable assistance at SAS Events promotions throughout the year as marshals, officals and stewards.
We are very keen to support IOM charities and involve charitable organisations within SAS Events promotions where possible. We are pleased to have helped IOM based organisations including Hospice IOM, IOM Childrens Centre, St John Ambulance, Special Care Baby Unit & Sport Erin.
Since incption SAS Events has contributed in excess of £11000 to local charities and the IOM Cycling Association.
Handicap or ability based competitions are a high priority as they are inclusive and great fun to be involved in. Unlike most events all competitors from total novice to seasoned campaigner are in with a chance of ‘being there at the finale’ which is not normally the case with a conventional ‘scratch race’. Have a look at the Bikestyle Handicap Series and the Classic Handicap Grand Prix Series to gain a flavour of the action.
Town Centre ‘Crit’ racing is becoming something of a speciality of SAS Events. We were pleased to promote the Dandara Port Erin Kermesse in 2015. We are launching a new Town Centre event in either 2017 or 2018 which will become an annual promotion.
All competitors will be warmly welcomed to events especially newcomers who will be reassured and directed through what can be a pretty daunting experience.
Where else in the world can a complete novice enter an event which may also include Olympic Gold medallists, World Champions or continental professionals not to mention GB Academy members and europe based full time 'semi pros'!
None Competitive Sportive
If mass participation 'challenge' type events are 'your thing' why not make the Lighthouses Challenge Powered by Microgaming a priority target event for 2017?
Will you be heading down Bray Hill with hundreds of like-minded cyclists in 2016? Only you can provide the answer to that question!
This event is now well established as the Premier Cycle Sportive on the Isle of Man calendar and we look forward to welcoming even more to step up to the challenge in 2017!
Enjoy your training, we look forward to welcoming you to our events in 2017.
